Australian Film Festival at IIC – Film Review

The Tall Man

Written and Directed by Tony Krawitz, ‘The Tall Man’ is a documentary based on a book of the same name by Chloe Hooper. The documentary is a puzzle which takes the audience on a roller coaster ride to determine the truth behind the famous Cameroon Domadgee death in custody case.

An inebriated Cameroon was arrested one morning for swearing at Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley, and just an hour later he was found dead in the Palm Island police station. The police claimed that Domadgee died because he fell and slipped when entering the cell. Nobody cared to explain how he got such bad injuries by just falling: four broken ribs, a badly ruptured liver and condition as bad as after a car accident.

The documentary uses court transcripts, interviews with Doomadgee’s family and fellow residents and video footage of Hurley re-enacting his version of that day’s event. It also touches upon Palm Island’s colonial history where racism was widespread.

The filmmaker plays fair by allotting almost the same time to Hurley’s supporters as he does to Domadgee’s. The local people of Palm Island would refer to Chris Hurley who was 6 ft 7 in. tall and weighed 115 kg as ‘The Tall Man’ (of the title) because of his giant physique. The documentary highlights the difficulty to bring him to trial, and his final acquittal makes us question the Judiciary. Krawitz couldn’t convince Chris Hurley to be in the film. The film ends with the results of the final investigation conducted in 2010, including an audio recording of Hurley’s statement.

Go Back to Where You Came From: Series 2

The documentary film shows us the lives of refugees and the difficulties they face trying to lead a normal life. The filmmaker tried a new genre of documentary film making i.e., a reality TV show format. This fresh approach makes us as an audience more interested, captivated and receptive. Refugees are vulnerable and prone to exploitation and violence. With no protection and no rights, they are completely helpless. This documentary does try and bring out the debate of asylum seekers in the open.

We were shown Episodes 2 and 3 from Season 1 of the documentary. It begins with a mini introduction of all the 6 participants – their names, ages, backgrounds and their opinion on the Australia's asylum seeker debate. Except one of the participants, all the rest shared a common hatred for refugees and this included an absolute racist (Raquel) and a complete Muslim hater (Adam). From being a part of  immigration raids in Malaysia, to living in a refugee camp in Kenya, from visiting slums in Jordan and going to war torn countries like Congo and Iraq – the participants do it all.

The film screening was followed by a discussion with filmmaker Rick McPhee. During which a woman said that the participants take more of our attention and sympathy than the refugees. Though she meant it otherwise, I felt that was the biggest advantage of the film. It worked well because, in order to win the asylum seekers debate in their favor, we need to convince people who are anti-refugees first. And the film does that easily, as it strikes a chord with especially such people and makes them think. They connect with participants who are challenged by the situations they are put in and change completely by the end of their journey. If the participants on the show could have a change of heart, so can other such people. The documentary gives us all a ray of hope.

Manmohan in a mess!!!! XD

I won the first prize in Inter College Cartoon Making Competition - Bazinga...here's my entry! :)
*
Topic: Sometimes even my lucky rocketship underpants won’t help!!!
Idea behind it: The cartoon focuses on Manmohan Singh and the sticky situation a few months ago he was in and still is. Anna Hazare and the anti corruption protest, the slew of scams and corruption scandals that were unearthed, the Food Bill and the newly revised BPL index, followed by Kapil Sibbal’s attempt  at monitoring all online content,  all these were responsible for making the situation worse for Mr. Singh. In short nothing can help our Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from the ugly situation he is stuck in!

**Diwali Mela**

LSR came alive with vibrant colours and festivity on 1st November, 2010. The shift from the boring classes to jubilant exultation, was to celebrate the festival of lights i.e. diwali. The traditional festival of lights with its significant message of victory of good over evil was celebrated with great pomp and show. Every year the celebration is earmarked by a small diwali mela organized by the NSS (National Social Service Organization) of LSR.

The mela was a happy affair with its assortment of food, games, accessories and the like. The presence of Rajasthan dancer’s, Punjabi dhol and a street play group left nothing else to be desired for. The festive mood was in full swing with every stall thronged by girls dancing either to the tune of Punjabi pop or Eminem rap. Apart from the stall’s set up by the NGO’s under the NSS, the different societies of LSR had also set up their respective stalls.

Entretia, the e- cell of LSR had also set up a stall at the diwali mela. Our stall was placed conveniently in the mela so as to capture more eyeballs, sell more products and hence earn more profit. The item’s exhibited for sale at our stall were cool flat chappals, assorted candies’, cloth bags, eco-friendly and multipurpose vase and customized posters. This was not all as there was also a betting game which required the individual to complete the task without tearing the paper given to the individual. Every member of the e-cell contributed in the successful sale of the items in the stall in their own way. For instance, some had taken up the duty of taking charge of the stall and persuading the customer’s into buying the items for sale at the diwali mela. The items were sold at “customer pocket friendly prices” like one pair of chappals for 130 rupees, bag for 165 rupees, and vase for 15 rupees and so on. This was the primary reason for the voluminous sale of our items at the diwali mela.

This effective pricing strategy helped us in earning profit and increasing the immensity of this festivity. The success of the event should also be attributed to all the members of the e-cell who volunteered and worked as a team under the praiseworthy leadership of the e-cell coordinator’s Smriti and Swati.

Tarang 2009 rocked !!

Tarang 2009 our college fest rocked like anything this time!! We enjoyed it a lot, the fest which was a three day event was especially entertaining and an exhilarating experience for all the LSR freshers like us! The fest span three days i.e. 13th to 15th November. The first day of the fest was the usual boring routine as all fests are, but it was great seeing your college in a new avatar, banners and decorations completely changed the look of our college!! On the second day of our fest, i.e. 14th the Saturday, there were a lot of interesting competitions like Indian music competition, Movie screening, Rangoli competition, street plays and Confessions of a tattoo. In the evening there was a mind-blowing performance by the famous band Advaita. The last day of the fest drew the maximum crowd as it was super packed with loads of interesting events like the Stage play competition, followed by Indian Music competition, Hindi poetry competition and Hive – splash of music. In the evening we had an awesome ending of the fest by the DJ night! For a fresher like me the experience was mind-blowing!!!

Exhausted after JMC event

Our second try at inter college competitions….pheww! We went to Jesus and Mary College History department fest and participated in the Newspaper design event. Our idea was appreciated for its innovativeness and cuteness, but it didn’t help us in winning. As usual they gave it to someone who had copied the coverage of the newspaper that came out on the day of our independence. Okay it was beautiful and a great event they had shown, but I thought maybe “Designing” something means making something new….guess I was wrong! We had tried showing the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010 – Delhi, but I think the idea went above their heads and just appeared “cute”! Exhausted….that’s all that’s coming to my mind right now!!

Miranda College cheats during Tarikh 2009

We went for the collage making event at Miranda House (a college in Delhi University) on 18-09-09 (Friday). It was the history department fest named “Tarikh”. But trust me it was an experience which no fresher should undergo, it was heartbreaking and depressing. We (me and my friend Priyata) had worked day and night for this event. But the people of Miranda are such tricksters; they appreciated our works thinking that we belong to their college but on knowing that we are from LSR there attitude towards us changed drastically. At the end moment they declared that we are not allowed to explain what we’ve tried to portray in our collage. And on top of that they changed the topic as well for the judges from “Imagining women now and after” it became “Imagining women now and ten years after”.
Off course we did not win, how could we when it had already been decided that anyone except LSR should win!! I knew people from Miranda had an inferiority complex from LSR people, but they would go to this extent I could never believe it unless I faced it myself. If you are a fresher like me and love participating in extra curricular activities then take my advice don’t ever go to Miranda for any competition as you will certainly loose it if they hold grudges against your college.
